The Destination

Tanzania is often described as the crown jewel of African hunting safaris. It remains one of the last true wilderness frontiers, offering hunters vast concessions, minimal development, and an unrivaled diversity of species. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the great Rufiji and Selous ecosystems, Tanzania embodies the romance and challenge of a traditional East African safari.

The Terrain

The landscapes of Tanzania are as diverse as its wildlife, creating a wide range of hunting environments:

  • The Selous: Africa’s largest protected hunting area. Dense miombo woodland, riverine valleys, and open plains.

  • Mara Serengeti: Acacia and commiphora woodland, dry plains and rocky outcrops and permanent springs.

  • Masailand: Rolling savannahs, volcanic highlands, arid woodland and acacia-dotted plains.

  • Ruaha Valley: Rocky escarpments, red earth, baobab forests and grasslands.

  • Kilombero Valley: Extensive floodplains bordering the Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers.

This variety ensures each safari offers a different experience.

Huntable Game Species

Tanzania boasts one of the most comprehensive species lists of any safari destination:

  • Dangerous Game:

    • Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Lion and Leopard.

  • Plains Game :

    • Greater & Lesser Kudu, Common & Roosevelt Sable, East African, Livingstone's & Patterson's Eland, Puku, Bushpig, Chobe & Masai Bushbuck, Klipspringer, EA & Southern Impala, Warthog, Burchell's Zebra, Common Reedbuck, Lichtenstein's Hartebeest, Harvey's & Natal Red Duiker, Yellow & Olive Baboon, Common & Defassa Waterbuck, Common & Mtn Reedbuck. Kirks Dik-dik, Grant’s, Robert's & Thomson’s Gazelle, Gerenuk, Fringe-eared Oryx, Nyasa, EWB & WWB Wildebeest, Spotted & Stripped Hyena, Nile Crocodile and Hippo.

  • Fishing: Some of the best Tiger fishing on the continent.

With such variety, Tanzania is one of the few places where hunters can pursue both the Big Five and an expansive selection of plains and specialty game on the same safari.

The Experience

  • Cuisine: Safari camps typically offer hearty meals featuring fresh meats, vegetables, and baked breads, accompanied by wild game harvested during the hunt. Traditional bush dinners by lantern light, sundowners around the fire, and full-service camp cooking bring a sense of old-world safari romance.

  • Lodging: Accommodations are classic East African safari camps with canvas tents and en-suite facilities as well as a more permanent lodge with luxury amenities. Regardless of style, the atmosphere emphasizes comfort while preserving the authenticity of a wilderness experience.
